Sustainability is becoming a defining requirement across the construction sector, shaping how projects are planned and executed from start to finish. The Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment sat down with Eugene Finn, Managing Director, on how Capcon has responded to this shift by embedding climate considerations into its everyday business operations.
Starting the Sustainability Journey
Capcon’s formal sustainability journey began with a Climate Action Voucher from Enterprise Ireland. This initial support enabled the company to participate in sustainability training and assess overall climate impact in order to develop an understanding of emissions sources.
The voucher provided a defined starting point, helping the business move beyond high-level awareness towards informed decision-making. It also allowed Capcon to approach sustainability in a way that was aligned with its size, structure and sector.
Sustainability Support From Enterprise Ireland
Building on this foundation, Capcon progressed to Enterprise Ireland’s GreenStart Programme. This stage supported the company in hiring an internal subject matter expert and developing a structured sustainability plan—translating goals into practical actions and targets.
GreenStart enabled Capcon to formalise its approach, embedding sustainability considerations into internal processes and business planning. This step marked a shift from assessment to implementation, with a clearer focus on consistency and accountability.
Throughout this process, Capcon engaged with the Climate Toolkit 4 Business, a national resource designed to support organisations at different stages of their climate journey. The toolkit provides guidance on understanding climate obligations, measuring emissions and identifying realistic actions to reduce impact.
In the future, Capcon plans to apply for GreenPlus, in continuation of the company’s dedicated commitment to reducing environmental impact.
Sustainability Champions
Capcon strives to be a example of how a thriving global business can also be a champion for the environment. In the past two years alone, the business has:
- Been named Exporter of the Year and Life Sciences & Climate Tech Exporter of the Year at the Asia Matters Business Awards 2024.
- Received a Silver Medal by EcoVadis, placing Capcon in the top 15% of global companies assessed for sustainability.
- Published a research paper with Engineers Ireland on the effects of climate change on the current capacity of rainwater drainage systems
- Taken home a Green Transformation Award in Construction
- Earned an ISO 14001:2015 Certification in Environmental Management certified by Management Systems Certification Ltd. (MSC)
Capcon’s case study with the Department of Enterprise, Tourism and Employment shows a company that views sustainability as an ongoing responsibility. By continuing to assess and improve its operations, Capcon is supporting sustainable ways of working across the organisation as it grows.
