Recognising Sustainable Impact in Drainage and Water Transformation

Capcon Engineering is proud to announce that we’ve been nominated for the Green Transformation Award – Construction and Green Water Transformation awards. For us, these nominations reflect the progress we’re making in lowering carbon emissions and conserving resources, while safeguarding mission-critical buildings against the challenges of extreme rainfall.

Siphonic Drainage as a Catalyst for Transformation

Our siphonic drainage solutions are central to our recognition in these categories. Unlike gravity drainage systems, our siphonic systems create high-speed flow within fewer and smaller pipes. This not only allows for a peak flow capacity of nearly 6,000 litres of water per second, a significant improvement over more traditional systems, but also significantly reduces carbon emissions through reduced construction and excavation requirements.
In a comprehensive performance analysis conducted at data centres in Dublin and Berlin, we recorded the following outcomes:

  • 22% reduction in above-ground drainage
  • 60% reduction in below-ground drainage
  • 63% reduction in raw material usage
  • 60% reduction in excavation requirements
  • 47% reduction in installation time
  • 58% reduction in carbon emissions
Diageo

A Landmark Project at Diageo

One recent project that highlights our dedication to sustainability is our work at Diageo’s €200 million carbon-neutral brewery in Kildare. By designing and installing a siphonic drainage system that supported 24/7 operations under heavy rainfall conditions, we eliminated the need for pumping systems and reduced embodied carbon.

Beyond Drainage: Broader Sustainability Initiatives

Also central to our sustainability initiatives has been the launch and expansion of EcoRainXS across commercial and industrial sites, a proprietary rainwater harvesting solution developed in collaboration with the WhiteWater Group. Designed to capture and purify rainwater for reuse in everything from greywater systems to data centre cooling, EcoRainXS uses climate-based rainfall data to prepare projects for changing weather patterns. Again, this helps us further reduce material use, conserve water, and provide improved resilience against more frequent extreme rainfall.

Solutions such as these also broadly align with the changes we have made internally. In the past 18 months alone, we have updated our policies on air pollution, biodiversity, and timber sourcing; switched our offices to LED lighting; and strengthened our sustainability training initiatives through mandatory ESG onboarding modules. Viewed alongside our siphonic drainage and EcoRainXS offerings, we feel these measures underline why we have been shortlisted for leadership in green transformation.

Our Commitment to Community Engagement

We also dedicate time and resources to community initiatives that reflect our belief that environmental responsibility and community well-being go hand in hand. Perhaps most notably, in recent years, our team has partnered with Digital Infrastructure Ireland on the Bulbs and Orchards in the Community initiatives, both of which have made a very visible difference to everyday community spaces.

Marking an Exceptional Year

These nominations follow a period of strong progress for Capcon, in which we’ve underlined our reputation as leading rainwater drainage consultants and global rainwater partners. Highlights from the past year alone include:

  • Being named Exporter of the Year and Life Sciences & Climate Tech Exporter of the Year at the Asia Matters Business Awards 2024.
  • Expanded project delivery from 100 to 170 active sites in the past year, significantly scaling our sustainability impact across Europe.
  • Being awarded a Silver Medal by EcoVadis, placing Capcon in the top 15% of global companies assessed for sustainability.
  • Captured up to 187 billion gallons of rainwater through our rainwater harvesting systems, easing pressure on municipal supplies.

Advancing Resilience Through Innovation

As extreme rainfall intensifies and sustainability expectations rise, we are committed to expanding solutions that safeguard operations and strengthen resilience across sectors. We see these nominations as not only highlighting the significant progress we’ve made in these areas but also positioning Capcon at the forefront of sustainable engineering.
