Upgrading & Refurbishment of Rainwater Drainage Systems

How Capcon is addressing the challenges of ageing drainage infrastructure.

Capcon Engineering, a leader in the design and installation of rainwater drainage systems, is seeing a significant rise in inquiries related to the upgrading of ageing drainage systems across Ireland, the United Kingdom and mainland Europe.

Buildings constructed over 15-20 years ago naturally face challenges with continued maintenance and upgrades. However, drainage systems are sometimes overlooked, and now more than ever, with changes in rainfall intensity, having a fully functioning rainwater drainage system is critical. This trend is particularly relevant for structures that were designed before the introduction of key industry standards, such as BS 12056 in 2000 and BS 8490 in 2007, which currently govern rainwater systems in the UK.

The Problem with Older Drainage Systems

Many older buildings are now struggling with non-performing drainage systems that were likely undersized at the time of installation. This usually isn’t due to any error in design or installation, but rather the lack of specific codes and standards available at the time. These systems, while functional, were simply not designed to handle the increasingly intense rainfall events that have become more common in recent years.

As rainfall intensities increase, older drainage systems are proving inadequate to manage the higher flow rates, leading to potential risks for buildings. The situation has prompted a surge in demand for refurbishing drainage solutions that bring these systems up to current standards, ensuring they can handle modern environmental challenges.

Capcon's Approach to Retrofitting

Capcon Engineering is currently engaged in numerous projects across the UK, retrofitting existing drainage systems to meet today’s codes and standards. We offer a range of solutions tailored to the specific needs of each project.

1. Complete System Replacement

The most comprehensive option involves removing the existing drainage system and replacing it with a new one that complies with current standards. This could involve installing either a primary only or a dual piped primary and secondary system designed to fully manage the rainwater flow and ensure compliance with today’s codes and standards, namely BS 12056 and BS 8490 in the UK.

2. Secondary Drainage Systems

In many cases, a full system replacement may not be feasible or necessary. Often, the primary system, although undersized, still functions adequately under normal conditions. The primary issues arise only during peak storm events, where the flow exceeds the system’s capacity.

For these situations, Capcon Engineering offers an innovative solution: the addition of a secondary drainage system. This approach involves leaving the original system in place and adding a secondary system to handle the excess flow during peak events. By calculating the flow rates of the existing system, Capcon can design a secondary system that complements the original, significantly increasing the overall capacity and effectiveness of the drainage.

This method not only enhances the performance of the system during extreme weather but also avoids the extensive work and costs associated with completely replacing a functioning system.

Tailored Drainage Refurbishment Solutions

Our expertise in siphonic and hybrid siphonic and gravity drainage systems allows us to offer bespoke solutions for each client. Whether it’s a new installation or a retrofit, Capcon is committed to ensuring that every drainage system they work on is fully optimised to meet the demands of today’s environmental conditions.

As rainfall patterns continue to change and intensify, the importance of upgrading and maintaining effective rainwater drainage systems cannot be overstated. Capcon Engineering is at the forefront of this essential work, providing the expertise and innovative solutions needed to protect buildings and infrastructure from the challenges of modern weather patterns.
